More Options. Better Solutions.

We continue to be the technology leader in Lagoon Treatment by perfecting and adding to the patented ‘Lagoon Solutions’ technology we first implemented in 1975. Today, EDI has the widest selection of lagoon processes and equipment compared to any other manufacturer in the industry with Seven (7) processes, four (4) methods of aeration distribution, over 150 combinations of aeration technology, and a wide selection of options and other lagoon treatment equipment. When it comes to front-of-plant ammonia removal, nitrate & total nitrogen removal across the widest range of temperature variations, long-term compliance planning, and energy and chemical savings in lagoons – no one does these better than EDI.

We have successfully designed & installed thousands of lagoons worldwide. EDI prides itself on stringent testing, rigorous R&D and the ability to meet strict federal guidelines with each of our lagoon systems. EDI believes that our industry is about long-term relationships, and we guarantee 100% customer satisfaction with each of our system sales. Low operating cost, minimal operator attention requirement, and long-term solids management make EDI lagoon systems the preferred process solution where land availability and proper topography permits.

IDEALTM Solution

Simple Solution; Superior Performance

The Intermittently Decanted Extended Aeration Lagoon, or IDEALTM, consists of an EDI floating lateral aeration system with Magnum fine bubble diffusers, two chains of BioReef BioCurtain, a static decanter with flow control valves, an overflow pipe with Storm Mode™, process controls, and a blower package. The simple operation of the IDEALTM provides easy, cost-effective operation while the sophistication of the design provides high levels of BOD, TSS and ammonia removal.

The process requires no active sludge management and extremely high flow events present no operational problem or concern from washout of the reactor. The IDEALTM also provides up to 66% total nitrogen as part of the basic package, which means the owner is already prepared for future increases in nitrate or nitrogen requirements. The unique ability of the IDEALTM to provide front-of-plant treatment provides several benefits over other lagoon-based technologies.

The IDEAL Bioreactor has the advantage of being outfitted with EDI's high-efficiency fine bubble FlexAir diffusers. The aeration technology applied to the IDEAL combines an operator-centric focus with almost four decades of advancement. EDI heavy-duty floating laterals or fixed-grid piping stand up to any environmental condition and allow easy access, even if the cell is covered. EDI diffusers provide the optimum combination of aeration efficiency and mixing performance that are crucial in a lagoon environment

EDI's patented BioReef BioCurtain incorporates multiple chains of BioReef that act as a biologically activated hydraulic curtain. The BioCurtain incorporates fixed-film technology to increase biomass in the reactor and provide contact stabilization during the settling and decant phases; it acts as a hydraulic buffer to address short-circuiting potential within the reactor and provides additional nitrification capability below 8 degrees Celsius

EDI-engineered decanters control effluent flow from the IDEAL BioReactor. The decanter reduces moving parts and reduces operator involvement. The IDEAL decanter is engineered to minimize head loss between the IDEAL and partial mix lagoon, a crucial feature when upgrading an existing lagoon system.

Other data acquisition and reporting needs, to provide maximum energy efficiency and total nitrogen removal.

Removing ammonia at the front of the plant provides several benefits. Other processes look to the back of the plant for ammonia removal where BOD concentration is lowest. The IDEAL process removes BOD and ammonia up front where warm, carbon-rich influent water is available to increase biological activity and denitrify for easy recovery of oxygen and alkalinity.

Total nitrogen and nitrate restrictions are on the horizon. Converting ammonia to nitrate is only the first step. Denitrification, or removing nitrate, is the second step necessary for total nitrogen removal. The IDEAL process provides this benefit as a natural function of the process, whereas many other systems require expensive upgrades to achieve similar results.

Upgrades for advanced system control and maximum pollutant removal are made simple. No modification to the core treatment process is necessary for expansion of performance.

Microbes use nitrate in the same way they use oxygen. Denitrification that occurs naturally in the IDEAL process reduces oxygen requirements and provides decreased operational energy cost. The alkalinity recovered during denitrification can decrease or eliminate the need for chemical addition that is needed in some plants so complete nitrification can occur.

The IDEAL process has shown an excellent ability to maintain performance during and after heavy water surges. The IDEAL process also adjusts easily to varying degrees of organic loading. All process control options incorporate "storm mode." This mode of operation initiates during extremely high flow events to eliminate the potential of reactor washout. The IDEAL BioReactor automatically resumes normal sequencing once flow decreases.

The IDEAL process offers simple operation with operator commitment similar to traditional aerated lagoons.

Complete Mix Lagoon

The complete mix (CM) lagoon is an aeraobic treatment process maintaining all biological solids in suspension with aeration and mixing using diffused aeration.

Partial Mix Lagoon

The partial mix (PM) lagoon is an enhanced facultative lagoon process using aeraiton to simultaneously remove BOD and suspended solids with low energy levels, which allow solids separation and digestion in the PM lagoon.

Quiescent Zone (Lagoon)

A quiescent zone (QZ) or lagoon is traditionally employed as a final polishing step before discharge on continuous discharge lagoon treatment systems.

ISTM Solution

Internal Separator

The patented EDI Lagoon Solutions – Internal Separator (IS™) Solution system uses an innovative biological solids separator module to increase biomass concentration in a completely mixed cell by prolonging sludge retention time (SRT). An increased biomass concentration, or mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS), results in a more efficient treatment basin. The longer SRT helps to provide complete BOD and ammonia removal.

The key innovation of the IS Solution is the maintenance-free nature of the system. There is no ongoing maintenance requirement once the modules are installed.  The operator receives the treatment benefits of an activated sludge lagoon without the hassle of clarifier management, sludge return, and sludge wasting, as well as all the pump maintenance and adjustment that accompanies a traditional system.

The IS Solution is an excellent option for lagoon upgrades or new treatment systems with an average design flow not greater than 100,000 gpd, peak flows not more than 4x the average design flow, and basins that are a minimum of 8-ft deep.  If your system is designed for larger flows, high peaking factors, or water depths of less than 8-ft, we recommend considering the IDEAL Solution for your treatment needs.

IS Solution

1)Simple operation
2)Keeps biomass in the primary cell for BOD removal
3)Low operational cost
4)No change in operator license required
5)Internal separator system
6)Full nitrification, even in cold environments
7)Continuous inflow and discharge
8)Complete mix reactor

SMARTTM Solution

Cold-Weather Nitrification for Lagoon & Secondary Effluent

The Submerged Media Aerated Reactor Technology provides a dedicated solution for cold-weather nitrification for lagoons and secondary effluents. The two-zone system houses a high-efficiency submerged aeration system that circulates wastewater through an insulated gravel bed for effective nitrification in any climate.

The EDI SMARTTM reactor utilizes effluent recirculation management to enhance and maintain the nitrification reaction to a maximum degree. Recirculation ensures a full distribution of the substrate and nitrifiers throughout the bed and proper management of the recirculation helps the reactor deliver peak performance. The recirculation is valuable tool but it can only be successful where there is a substrate available to build and distribute the biomass population throughout the reactor.

The SMARTTM reactor operation is one which will use the natural ammonia substrate from wastewater being fed to the SMARTTM reactor to maintain nitrifier populations where substrate is available continuously throughout the year. The SMARTTM process can also add supplemental ammonia substrate to maximize nitrifier population during warmer weather in advance of cold weather operation.

SMARTTM Features and Benefits
